The story · read to your guests

Twenty Years Later. Three Murders. One Time Capsule.

The Class of 2006 is back in the gym at Oakridge High, Home of the Fighting Possums, for its twenty-year reunion, and everyone came dressed as their 2006 self. Twenty years ago, on prank night, the class treasurer fell from the gym catwalk, and that same spring the senior trip money vanished. Tonight the class time capsule finally opens: letters to their future selves, sealed with three padlocks. The reunion organizer, the prom queen turned parenting influencer, Most Likely to Succeed (who didn't), the student teacher who's now the principal, the quarterback who never left, the class clown turned HOA president, the goth who got rich and the yearbook editor all have something to hide.

Your guests hand out NDAs, write HOA fines, pitch startups, re-sign yearbooks and nominate each other for brand-new superlatives. Then the bodies start to drop: at the class photo, the prom-court slow dance and the Where Are They Now slideshow. After each murder everyone opens a sealed envelope with new secrets and new jobs, and the dead come back as hall monitors with detention slips. By the end the clues point to one guest, everyone votes on who is Most Likely to Have Done It, and then the time capsule is opened.

Host questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can play? expand_more

Anywhere from 8 to 20. Characters 1 to 8 carry the murders and every clue the solution needs, so print characters 1 to however many guests you have. Each extra guest adds a character with their own goals, so nobody's role is missing and no clue is lost.

What if someone cancels on the day? expand_more

Just print one fewer character. Because guests join in a fixed order and the case never depends on characters 9 to 20, the game still works at every headcount from 8 to 20.

Do we have to be from the class of 2006? expand_more

Not at all. Everyone plays a character from the Oakridge High Class of 2006, so it works for any group, though if you were in high school in the 2000s the jokes will hit harder. It's a great theme for a 35th or 40th birthday, or your own real reunion.

What do guests wear? expand_more

Their 2006 selves: velour tracksuits, popped collars, emo eyeliner, letterman jackets, trucker hats. Every invitation suggests a few touches for that character. Thrift-store easy.

Can women play the men's roles, or the other way round? expand_more

Yes. Eight characters have a man and a woman version with their own name, pronouns and portrait, and anyone can play anyone if your group likes cross-casting for laughs.

Can the host play too? expand_more

Yes. Nobody knows who the killer is, not even the killer until the final envelope. The host runs the timeline and can play a character, the class president included, as long as they don't read the solution page until the end.

How long does it take? expand_more

About three hours from doors open to the awards, with three murders spaced through the night.

Is it hard to solve? expand_more

You can guess after the first murder and prove it after the third. Ballots score who, how and why separately, so even close guesses earn points.

Do I need a colour printer? expand_more

No. The art is blue ballpoint doodles with a touch of pink highlighter, so it looks right in black and white, and it's cheap on ink.
